Gulpiyuri … A beach different from all you’ve seen !! … the smallest in the world and located inland, a whim of nature in Asturias

The beach of Gulpiyuri is a small beach located in the council of Llanes, north of the town of Naves, which was declared a natural monument on December 26, 2001. The depth and size of the water area provides us with a natural pool of turquoise waters and well protected from the wind. It is a small beach of the sea but located inland, among green agricultural fields.
On a cliffy limestone coast the sea was creating a cave inland and the bottom of the cave sank, (a karstic phenomenon known as dolina), leaving a small circular hole about 50m in diameter 100m from the coast. This sinking is still connected to the coast and the sea water enters, noticing also the tides and having a beach of fine sand.

The smallest beach in the world … a unique phenomenon where you can not see the immensity of the sea …
Gulpiyuri Beach

This Natural Monument has no visible connection to the sea

DATA:

  • It is an indoor beach, with no direct access to the sea.
  • It consists of white sand and salt water, but the Bay of Biscay beats a few meters and only sneaks below the cliffs.
  • It measures about 40 meters in length and hardly remains with sand during high tide. It registers a phenomenon called drainage when the low tide begins.
  • It is cataloged as a Natural Monument.
  • Gulpiyuri does not have any service and is not accessible, as it is surrounded by meadows with a higher altitude. It is only possible to be reached walking by agricultural road from the beach of San Antolín or from Naves and its isolation has allowed the relatively good conservation of this small and delicate natural jewel.
  • To leave the car it is better to do it in the town of Naves that has a large parking lot (all day € 2)
