In the Mountain of the Picos de Europa and especially in its foothills, there is one of those paradises to enjoy enormously “The Garganta del Río Casaño, or Casañu, is a path on the margin of a very crystalline and capricious river of forms that passes through esculti , majadas, foces and castañeos and crossing it by singular bridges. There we will see the old caves to keep the cattle and ancestral hen houses or circular stone cochineras.
Itinerary: La Molina – Bridge of the miners – La Molina
Difficulty : low
Distance : 7 km round trip
Duration : 3 hours
We recommend visiting the Garganta del Casaño from La Molina, on a walk where we will not get tired of hearing the rumor of water or enjoying the visual spectacle of the waters scurrying between the rocks or the games of the colors of lights and backgrounds in the innumerable pools that we find along our route. Starting from the village of La Molina, there is no loss. Just at the beginning of the village, on the wall of the chapel of the Virgen de la O, the route is indicated, we will descend a few hundred meters along a wide stone road (it may be slippery in the rainy season) 0mos face to face with a stone bridge, the Pompedro bridge. And across the road that goes south to the Roman bridge of Pompedru. In this place there are two foces, one on the left, chopped by La Voluga, and another on the right, under the Pompedru, the one on the right is the right path to Garganta del Casaño. A few meters above the Pompedro bridge we will find a new bridge, this time made of concrete, which will lead us to the right bank of the river through which we will walk for a good distance following the narrow, but comfortable, path that takes us upstream until we come across a new bridge, the Escobín bridge, through which we will cross the river again to situate ourselves on its left bank. From here on we will continue, upstream, leaving on the left some stone cabins and some meadows that move us slightly away from the river. We will continue until we reach a new bridge, this time the Mineros bridge, which puts us back on the right bank of the Casaño … and the end of the route.
The return we advise to do it by the route of the going, the landscape becomes different and with luck, if we pay attention, we will see otters and squirrels.
For the most daring who want to reach the source of the river “Oyu la Madre”
To get to the source of the river is, shortly after passing the bridge of the miners in the area of the Vega Batuda, leave the river bed and climb the mountain through a channel carved into the rock, and continue through it with much caution since it is very narrow, until descending again to the Casaño and the source of the river, the road is not very marked, but the direction we must take is intuited perfectly.
